Warming shifts the biomass distribution of soil microarthropod communities

چکیده

Climate warming is often more detrimental to large body sized organisms than small organisms. Yet, how such differential effects of at organismal levels affect aggregate community properties, as biomass, remains little understood. Here, using geothermally warmed sub-Arctic grassland soils, we investigate total biomass (product density and individual mass) two major groups soil microarthropods (Collembola mites), which are composed both species, shift in soils when by ∼3–∼6 °C. Our results show that Collembola significantly decreased predominantly due a decline the species. In contrast, mite showed unimodal response warming. As result, there was towards dominated microarthropod communities soils. Within Collembola, deep living eu-edaphic functional group declined most whereas mites pronounced oribatid mites. study highlights induced shifts likely greater on several Collembola.

Soil warming and CO2 enrichment induce biomass shifts in alpine tree line vegetation.

Responses of alpine tree line ecosystems to increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations and global warming are poorly understood. We used an experiment at the Swiss tree line to investigate changes in vegetation biomass after 9 years of free air CO2 enrichment (+200 ppm; 2001-2009) and 6 years of soil warming (+4 °C; 2007-2012). The study contained two key tree line species, Larix decidua and Pin...

Indirect Short- and Long-Term Effects of Aboveground Invertebrate and Vertebrate Herbivores on Soil Microarthropod Communities

Recognition is growing that besides ungulates, small vertebrate and invertebrate herbivores are important drivers of grassland functioning. Even though soil microarthropods play key roles in several soil processes, effects of herbivores-especially those of smaller body size-on their communities are not well understood. Therefore, we progressively excluded large, medium and small vertebrate and ...

Biomass distribution in marine planktonic communities

Patterns in primary production and carbon export from the cuphotic zone suggest that the relative contribution of planktonic heterotrophs to community biomass should decline along gradients of phytoplankton biomass and primary production. Here, we use an extensive literature data survey to test the hypothesis that the ratio of total heterotrophic (bacteria + protozoa + mesozooplankton) biomass ...

Elevational Shifts of Freshwater Communities Cannot Catch up Climate Warming in the Himalaya

Climate warming threatens biodiversity at global, regional and local levels by causing irreversible changes to species populations and biological communities. The Himalayan region is highly vulnerable to climate warming. This calls for efficient environmental management strategies because biodiversity monitoring is costly, particularly for the developing countries of the Himalaya. Species distr...

Molecular biomass and MetaTaxogenomic assessment of soil microbial communities as influenced by soil DNA extraction procedure

Three soil DNA extraction procedures (homemade protocols and commercial kit) varying in their practicability were applied to contrasting soils to evaluate their efficiency in recovering: (i) soil DNA and (ii) bacterial diversity estimated by 16S rDNA pyrosequencing. Significant differences in DNA yield were systematically observed between tested procedures. For certain soils, 10 times more DNA ...
